Our family would like to thank you for taking the time to visit our website for Mackenzie Grace McMahan. Mackenzie was born on June 1, 2007 at U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville. She was the picture of health weighing 7.9 pounds and 20 inches long. Her first two weeks were very happy, and her Mother, Megan McMahan age 21, was so blessed to have a beautiful little angel. Mackenzie had always had a problem spitting up, but it began to get worse and then the vomiting began. Her family doctor referred her to a specialist where they found a massive tumor on her left kidney. It was already the size of a softball and had to be removed immediately. After the doctors ran a catscan, they found spots on her liver and lungs. The surgery went sucessfully, but within weeks those spots had became tumors and had gotten larger. She was flown to Vanderbilt where she underwent radiation and intense chemo treatments. Things had begun to look better as these treatments were shrinking the tumors. After 4 weeks of doing all the radiation possible, she was brought back to Children's. Within two days of being back home at Children's, Mackenzie began to have seizures, which meant there were now tumors on her brain. At that point her prognosis was grim, so she was kept comfortable for the remainder of her stay. Our sweet little Mackenzie passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Oct. 27, at 11:20am. while in her Mother's arms.
Her cancer was a rare and dangerous type of cancer called Rhabdoid. Less than 200 cases are found in the country per year, so not many people have ever heard of it. There are no specific treatments for this cancer, so Mackenzie's family would like to begin a non-proffit organization for Rhabdoid Cancer Research. All donations from this point on will help find a cure for this terrible cancer. We thank you for all your thoughts and prayers!
